Animal sacrifice - A cow's head hangs from a cross near St. Jacques's hole during the Plaine du Nord voodou festival in Haiti.
The head of sacrificed cow dangles from a cross at the annual voodou festival held in Plaine du Nord, Haiti on July, 24, 2008. The festival centers around St. Jacques' hole, a mud pit on the edge of the village, and honors the lwa Ogou, who presides over matters of war, politics, fire and iron, as well as St. James, the Catholic warrior saint. Animal sacrifice to appease the spirits is an intrinsic part of voodou. Catholicism and voodou are forever intertwined in Haiti.
