Lance & Sarah’s Los Angeles County Arboretum wedding – Images by David Zentz Weddings

Last weekend I had the pleasure of photographing the wedding of Lance and Sarah in the Rose Garden at the Los Angeles County Arboretum. The couple, who live in San Francisco, were one of the first to book me after I moved to Los Angeles, well in advance of the big day. It was wonderful to finally witness their wedding after such a long time planning.

The couple started the day at the luxurious Langham Hotel in Pasadena where they each prepared for the day with their families. Then we all moved down the road to the equally beautiful grounds of the L.A. Arboretum for the ceremony and reception. Both were held in the Arboretum’s Rose Garden, which was the perfect setting for a small wedding such as theirs. The ceremony was held just at as the sun was setting, providing a beautiful warm glow to the scene. During the ceremony they had a unique ceremony called a ‘ring warming,’ in which the rings are passed from guest to guest before being exchanged by the couple. Following the reception I went off with the couple to take some portraits in the nearby herb garden while the guests enjoyed cocktails as the ceremonial space was converted to a reception space. A delicious dinner was then was prepared and presented by Contemporary Catering of Encino. After the reception wound down the couple then stayed behind to share a quiet and touching moment alone before exiting to a grand a sparkler send off. Following the affair everyone moved back to the Langham for a fun afterparty in the couple’s bungalow suite.

Overall it was a great day and I wish the couple much success in the future!

Bride at Long Beach wedding

I recently folded my old wedding photography site and blog in favor of my new wedding photography site , which better features my work and integrates more features for clients, such as private online proofing galleries and direct, online print ordering. At the same time I decided that rather than maintaining a blog for each site I would consolidate the wedding blog into this one. So, in order to preserve some of the content from my previous blog, I’m posting some of the favorites here before moving forward with new work.

Last Saturday I had the pleasure of shooting a very fun, unique wedding held by an equally fun and unique couple, Adam and Ashley Phalen, in Santa Monica. The wedding and reception were held at the Santa Monica Bay Woman’s Club, a cool old building dating back to the early 1900s. The couple are both very creative – Adam is a sound designer at the Kirk Douglas Theater in Culver City while Ashley is a sushi chef  -  and put a ton of effort into making practically all of their own decorations, from the place mats to their very own logo, a pair of AA batteries, representing their names. They had a great group of family and friends present and everyone had a great time. In addition, they were fortunate to have the lead singer of their favorite band, The 88, play live for their first dance after striking up a conversation with the lead singer at a gig on the Sunset Strip. They had been planning on having a friend sing one of their songs and when they told him he obliged to sing it himself. Very cool.

Well, the engagement’s not really a surprise. Just a fun moment that happened while I was photographing Erinn’s sister, Heidi, and her fiance Seth south of Los Angeles in Laguna Beach, a town I’ve been told is famous for the MTV show, Laguna Beach. I’ve never seen it, but this parody gives me a pretty good idea. Anyhoo, the two are getting married in Michigan next summer and I’m doing their wedding and engagement photography. As for what’s going on behind me, you’ll have to ask Erinn’s mother.

Laguna Beach outdoor wedding

Here are some images I like from some recent weddings that I photographed. The first was a small, but beautiful, poolside wedding for Chris and Shino Eckardt held in Villa Park, east of Los Angeles. The second was even smaller, with just 5 attendees including the bride and groom, Jim Schuessler and Kathi Cray, two of their friends from San Diego and a minister. But what they lacked in size they made up for in setting by choosing a gorgeous location on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Laguna Beach and holding it at sunset. And fortunately for all of us, June Gloom decided to take a break that evening and let the sun shine through. I have also included these and others in an updated slideshow on my wedding photography site http://www.davidzentz.com/weddings.
