Haitian capital palace

This was the scene last time I was in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, in 2008. Other than the overcast skies (forecast shows rain for the next 10 days!), I expect little to be the same when we return this Thursday. At the moment the Haitian National Palace is still in ruins and the surrounding Champs de Mars plaza is still a tent camp, more than two years after an earthquake leveled the nation’s already troubled capital. Add to that a cholera epidemic and who knows what to expect. What I do expect to find however is the same spirit in the people who live there, as they carry on in the face of seemingly insurmountable circumstances.

This time I’m heading down with Erinn and our friend Michael to tag along with GlobalDIRT (disaster immediate response team), a fledgling NGO, started by a young Marine, Adam Marlatt, during the immediate aftermath of the earthquake. Following the tragic event, Adam and Robert Sullivan, also a Marine, hit the ground, converting a bread truck into an ambulance to help rescue some of the countless victims. Only two years later the organization is working on building the first 24/7 911 ambulance system in the country and is working with the local government and other NGO’s to help create a more efficient system that will better aid victims in Port-au-Prince and eventually across the country. We’ll be telling their story as well as discussing the shortcomings of emergency medical care in Haiti and the inefficiencies of some of the larger NGO’s.

Erinn and I are paying for this project largely out of pocket will be operating on a shoestring budget. We can therefore use all the support we can get in order to make a professional project that we hope will bring a large amount of attention to the organizations efforts and the ongoing problems in Haiti. Upon our return we’ll be aiming to publish the story in a number of magazines and news outlets. I will also be shooting video, which we hope will broaden the reach of our story. Of course, prints will be available for purchase when we return, but we are also taking pre-orders/donations at a slight discount in order to help us while we are down there. If you care to help out I have listed below the thank you perks I am offering in exchange for your support. Other than that, wish us luck!

Venice Photo Exhibit and Fundraiser flyer

Venice Photo Exhibit and Fundraiser

Anyone in Los Angeles on May 13th is welcome to come to my photo exhibit opening at Nikki’s, 72 Market Street, Venice, CA. I’ll be there by 9 and plan to stay through closing. Since I’m primarily showing Haiti work we’re making the event a fundraiser as well, with voluntary donations being collected at the door. As with my last fundraiser, the money will benefit Habitat for Humanity, with all money going directly to their efforts to provide shelter and long-term housing for those affected by the January earthquake. I’ll also have a few images from Venice up on the wall. Also note that there’s a special happy hour from 10-12, so drinks will be cheap! It should be a fun night. Hoping to see a good turnout!

Check for Haiti fundraiser

Just wanted to announce that I mailed off a check today for the money I raised for Habitat for Humanity’s efforts in Haiti. Big big thank you to all who participated in my little fundraiser!! I hope you all enjoy your prints. When I hear that there’s something in the $11 billion range needed for reconstruction it seems like it’s impossible to make a dent, but every little bit helps. Hopefully I’ll be able to get down there in the next year to report on the progress and keep people’s awareness up so the help keeps coming.

My jaw dropped when I saw the destruction to the National Palace in Port-au-Prince, Haiti on the news. Here’s a photo from when I was standing in front of the pristine landmark only 1 1/2 years ago. I can’t believe the destruction wrought by this catastrophe and can’t imagine a more vulnerable place for this to occur. This island just can’t seem to catch a break. My heart goes out to everyone there during the recovery. On that note I’m going to try to arrange a print sale of the work I did while I was down there in order to raise funds for the recovery. I have a number of prints ready that I already happened to be working on and will continue to print until I have enough for an exhibit. I haven’t yet figured out the venue or the charity yet, but will get it worked out soon. I’ll be sure to post an update on that when I know more.

Saut D'eau image in Wanderlust Magazine

It’s been a long time since I posted, but I thought before putting up some new images from our trip east I’d put up some good news I received today. The fine folks at Aurora Photos, who represent a number of my images, passed along a link to their blog featuring a post mentioning that one of my images from Saut D’eau was printed in Wanderlust, Britain’s premier travel magazine. Woohoo!  More images from the series are available on my main site. Stay tuned for some new images from Maine, Boston and PA in the coming days.
