Last Saturday I had the pleasure of shooting a very fun, unique wedding held by an equally fun and unique couple, Adam and Ashley Phalen, in Santa Monica. The wedding and reception were held at the Santa Monica Bay Woman’s Club, a cool old building dating back to the early 1900s. The couple are both very creative – Adam is a sound designer at the Kirk Douglas Theater in Culver City while Ashley is a sushi chef  -  and put a ton of effort into making practically all of their own decorations, from the place mats to their very own logo, a pair of AA batteries, representing their names. They had a great group of family and friends present and everyone had a great time. In addition, they were fortunate to have the lead singer of their favorite band, The 88, play live for their first dance after striking up a conversation with the lead singer at a gig on the Sunset Strip. They had been planning on having a friend sing one of their songs and when they told him he obliged to sing it himself. Very cool.

Well, the engagement’s not really a surprise. Just a fun moment that happened while I was photographing Erinn’s sister, Heidi, and her fiance Seth south of Los Angeles in Laguna Beach, a town I’ve been told is famous for the MTV show, Laguna Beach. I’ve never seen it, but this parody gives me a pretty good idea. Anyhoo, the two are getting married in Michigan next summer and I’m doing their wedding and engagement photography. As for what’s going on behind me, you’ll have to ask Erinn’s mother.

I thought I’d post another shot from one of the weddings I recently photographed. Two brothers who’d been having fun horsing around all evening finally started to lose steam towards the end of the night.  This was from the Eckardt wedding in Villa Park, just outside Los Angeles. Not a particularly “wedding”-type moment, which is why I hadn’t posted it before. But it’s a moment I liked, so I thought I’d put it up.

Here are some images I like from some recent weddings that I photographed. The first was a small, but beautiful, poolside wedding for Chris and Shino Eckardt held in Villa Park, east of Los Angeles. The second was even smaller, with just 5 attendees including the bride and groom, Jim Schuessler and Kathi Cray, two of their friends from San Diego and a minister. But what they lacked in size they made up for in setting by choosing a gorgeous location on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Laguna Beach and holding it at sunset. And fortunately for all of us, June Gloom decided to take a break that evening and let the sun shine through. I have also included these and others in an updated slideshow on my wedding photography site http://www.davidzentz.com/weddings.
More images after the jump.

Los Angeles wedding photography advertisement

Los Angeles wedding photography ad

Another way I’m branching out is by expanding my wedding photography and headshots business. I was recently invited to be a preferred vendor at the Fairmont Miramar Hotel in Santa Monica and have since placed ads with them and The Gathering Guide as well as a couple other local websites here in Marina Del Rey. I am also planning on placing an ad for my headshots business with a local acting school, Act Now. I have also created a new wedding photography website. Soon I will be creating unique sites for both of these components of my business. Above is an example of the ad I placed with the Fairmont Miramar. Thanks to Cameron Thomas for his help with the design and type setting.
