Nana Agyapong in Venice, California

Red, White & Blue 1

Last week I had another amazing shoot with my friend Nana Agyapong, a Venice-based artist, model and actress. My first shoot with her was strictly portrait and confined to the studio, so this time we headed off in another direction. Nana has proven to be one of my favorite people to work with, because in addition to being stunning in front of the camera, she brings an amazing level of energy and creativity to the process. Shooting with her is truly a collaborative effort! In addition, she’s an amazing trooper, as it was quite chilly out there! Check out several more shots after the jump!

Flames in the sand, Venice, Calif., 2011.

I was browsing through some photos and found this miscategorized gem in a folder from a portrait shoot I did in January. Erinn and I apparently went out for a walk that evening and came across this cool pattern in the sand just north of the Venice Breakwater. I loved the suggestion of flames where the water recedes, and all the better that the flames were accentuated by the warmth of the setting sun. Lesson learned to either stay more organized or at least go looking through your old photos from time to time to see what you missed.

I spent some time walking around Marina del Rey the other day and grabbed a few frames. Not too much to say about these, but I think I might make a life-sized enlargement of the drinking fountain and put it on a wall, right around drinking fountain height. The sea lion is from a family of them that calls one of the inlets home. This one appears to be quite happy there!

A photo of the downtown Los Angeles skyline

Sketch of LA Skyline

This is an image I’ve been sitting on, but thought I’d post in lieu of, or for lack of, a Christmas lights image this year. I shot this over the summer while on an assignment that had me at USC. It started as a happy accident with my setup. Once I saw the effect though I thought it was a unique take on the skyline and kept working it until I came up with something I like. I’m heading to New York next month and will try to repeat it there. Should make a nice collection eventually. Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all!

Show Your Face – Images by David Zentz

Last month I did a series of portraits on the front patio at Hotel Erwin during the Venice Art Crawl. The idea was to create a participatory art piece that people could be a part of making and then come back and see displayed the following month. I’m a big fan of close-up portraits, such as those done by Martin Schoeller, that focus only on the subjects’ faces, particularly the eyes. You can tell so much about someone’s character by studying their face up close and I wanted to do my own take on the concept. The Art Crawl seemed like the perfect forum, as I knew there would be a large number of people passing through and surely some of them would be willing to sit for me. I had more than 100 participants over the course of the night! In order to keep the images spontaneous and also handle the volume of people, I shot only three or four frames per person and gave very little instruction other than ‘do whatever you want.’ I thought it would be interesting to see how people reacted. The results were great, showing a wide variety of expressions, including silly, straightforward, engaged and distant. Over the next month I narrowed the edit down to 1 per person and spent a fair number of hours individually toning and sharpening the images so they’d each be uniform and pop off the paper or screen.

Last night I displayed the results back in the same space where I shot them and was happy to see a number of the participants return to check out the results. All of the images were projected on a screen in a continually looping slideshow and 33 were printed and hung on a curved chain curtain that’s proven to be a great space for hanging art. Thanks to everyone who participated! If you’re interested in purchasing a reprint of your photo you can click on the slideshow above. If you know you were one of the images I included in the print show you can contact me at dz@davidzentz.com to purchase your print. Below is a photo of the exhibit, in case you missed it.

San Onofre nude beach

The official line at San Onofre State Beach

Biking at Camp Pendleton

Biking at Camp Pendleton

Erinn and I spent a couple days last week camping at San Onofre State Beach and surfing at nearby Surf Beach. The camping, sandwiched between the bluffs and I-5 and an active Amtrak rail, leaves something to be desired, but Surf Beach may be my new favorite place in Southern California. As a novice surfer, there’s really no place better that I’ve found in my limited experience. The beach is a mile or so long with low waves steadily rolling in for most of the day, making it a great place to learn without fear of getting thrashed about.

Aside from 4 trips out into the surf, we also went for an afternoon bike ride on a trail that runs through Camp Pendleton, which begins on the south side of the park and extends for miles down to Oceanside, just north of San Diego. Not really the prettiest scenery there, but it made for a good ride.

We also met up with some friends Erinn knows through work who frequent the beach despite the 1 1/2 hour trek from LA. They do it right though, cruising down in a late-model VW camper complete with a bed and small kitchen. We met up with them on the beach and then joined them at their van, where they treated us to a home cooked meal.

Oh, and despite the beach’s reputation as a nude beach, we saw no sign of it other than numerous signs warning would-be nudists to keep their shorts on.

Nude beach or not, I’m sure we’ll be heading back there soon and often.

photo of a mud-splattered American flag on the side of a Jeep

After a brief walk around the neighborhood this afternoon I came across an extremely mud-splattered Jeep parked on my street. I thought it would make for some good found art, so I spent a couple minutes shooting it and came up with this. Kind of a photographic version of a Jasper Johns. Perhaps slightly less valuable, but I like it all the same.
